Sea turtles Jamaica

The Oracabessa Sea Turtle Project is a community-led conservation initiative based in Oracabessa Bay, Jamaica, dedicated to protecting endangered sea turtles, particularly the Hawksbill species. Since its founding in 2005, the project has worked to monitor nesting beaches, safeguard turtle nests, and support the safe release of hatchlings into the ocean. Local residents, many of whom are former fishermen, are trained as Turtle Monitors, combining traditional knowledge with modern conservation practices. By promoting eco-tourism and environmental education, the project not only helps preserve marine biodiversity but also provides sustainable livelihoods for the community.
