Our Story

Sea Turtles Jamaica began in 2005 as the Oracabessa Bay Sea Turtle Project, growing into a powerful conservation movement on Jamaica’s north coast. Our mission: protect endangered hawksbill sea turtles and give the next generation a fighting chance.
And here’s the extraordinary part — you can be part of it. Visitors from around the world join us for unforgettable hatchling releases, guiding tiny turtles on their first journey to the sea. It’s a moment that stays with you forever.

Protecting the Next Generation
From locating nests to safeguarding them against predators, every egg matters. Our team patrols the beach nightly, counting, recording, and shielding each nest. In some cases we use controlled incubation to push survival rates beyond what nature alone can manage.
Caring for the Coastline & Communities
Healthier beaches mean healthier turtles. We restore sand quality, remove debris, and prevent conditions that destroy nests. Local fishers become beach wardens. Visitors become advocates. Through education and deep community ties, we’re changing how an entire coastline sees these ancient animals.

In Oracabessa we’ve proven that consistent, community-led protection works; nesting numbers are rising, not a single nest has been lost to poaching in twenty years.
